Set up your workstation ergonomically
Most UQ staff spend a lot of time at their workstation. If your workstation is not set up correctly, you may experience discomfort or develop an injury.
Optimise your UQ workstation
To avoid injury, review your workstation set-up using the computer workstation self-assessment tool.
- WorkSafe Queensland also provides workstation set-up advice and videos
- If you need extra help, contact your local work health and safety coordinator (WHSC)
Request a height-adjustable workstation
If you have a medical condition that requires a sit-stand workstation, follow these steps:
- Complete the online computer workstation self-assessment tool
- Contact your Work Health and Safety Coordinator or the Ergonomics and Rehabilitation Advisor to review your workstation
- Ask your GP or specialist to complete the sit-stand workstation clinical recommendation form (PDF, 249.59 KB) or provide a medical certificate recommending the equipment
- Submit the completed form or certificate to your Work Health and Safety Coordinator.
This process ensures decisions are guided by medical advice and that standing won’t worsen existing conditions.
Choose appropriate furniture and equipment
Faculties, schools and centres have responsibility for providing suitable equipment. Purchases of seating and furniture should be made through UQeMarket.
IT equipment like keyboards and mice can also be purchased via UQeMarket. HSW approved models outlined on the ITS procurement webpage.
Specialised seating, furniture or equipment can be arranged for staff with:
- existing injuries
- ongoing pain or discomfort
- very tall or short stature
- a specific disability.
Contact your local Work Health and Safety Coordinator or the Ergonomics and Rehabilitation Advisor for advice.
Set up your home workstation
Whether you work from home regularly or occasionally, it’s important to set up your workstation properly.
- Review your home set-up using the Computer workstation self-assessment tool and the Working from home – work area self-assessment (PDF, 462.78 KB)
- See Flexible work procedure for details on working from home requirements.
Build in breaks into your day
To build healthy breaks into your day, install the Breaktimer app. It provides customisable prompts to remind you to step away from your desk.
Arrange your laboratory workstation
If you work in a lab, follow the Laboratory Ergonomics Guideline for advice on setting-up your workstation.
Performing exercises and stretches in between tasks can help manage or reduce injury risks from lab work. Try these exercises for laboratory staff (PDF, 698.67 KB).
