Work safely with electrical equipment
The Electrical Safety Procedure outlines responsibilities for staff and others regarding electrical safety.
Manage electrical equipment safely
Purchase, acquisition and installation
Read the Safe Procurement and Acquisition of Plant and Equipment Guideline for guidance on purchasing or acquiring electrical equipment for University use.
Hazardous areas with explosive or flammable atmospheres
Hazardous areas where explosive or flammable atmospheres may occur include laboratories, chemical workshops, chemical stores and other areas using flammable chemicals. If an area has a hazardous area classification, specific regulations apply to manage electrical risks.
See WorkSafe Queensland for information on classifying hazardous areas and using electrical equipment in hazardous atmospheres.
Wet areas and electrical safety
Special requirements apply when installing electrical equipment in wet areas. These requirements also apply when retrofitting liquid containers near electrical equipment.
Contact PF Assist for more information.
Test and tag portable equipment
‘Test and tag’ is the periodic inspection and testing of portable electrical equipment to ensure safety.
Only registered test and tag contractors may perform these services.
The Property and Facilities Division has negotiated rates with UGL (UQ’s electrical contractor). Contact your Archibus Nominated User (PDF, 1.13 MB) to log a work request.
Some equipment has specific testing requirements. See the Electrical Testing and Tagging Guideline for details.
