Comply with rules on prohibited and restricted carcinogens
Where possible, replace carcinogenic substances with safer alternatives. If you must use them, work with the minimum quantities required and follow the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable) regarding personal exposure.
Follow the cytotoxic guidelines
Work with cytotoxic compounds must follow the Cytotoxic Compounds Safe Use, Handling, Storage and Waste Management Guidelines.
Apply for authorisation to use prohibited or restricted carcinogens
Some carcinogens are prohibited or restricted for industrial use but may be used in research with the correct authorisation.
If your research involves prohibited or restricted carcinogens, the principal researcher must obtain authorisation from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.
See the Prohibited and Restricted Carcinogen Use, Handling and Storage procedure for more information.
Complete required training
You must complete training before starting any work with hazardous chemicals or in laboratories.
Check the training and induction requirements for hazardous chemical users and laboratory workers.
