Chemical inventory management
UQ workers must record the details of each hazardous chemical package into a chemical inventory upon arrival, confirm that a compliant Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is available and ensure Globally Harmonised System (GHS) labelling compliance.
The inventory must be updated when a package is transferred, disposed of or removed, and a stocktake must be completed at least every two years.
ChemInventory
UQ provides access to ChemInventory software to support this chemical inventory process.

New users must be added by a local site administrator, contact your local area Manager or Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator for details.

While ChemInventory is UQ’s preferred tool, organisational units may use alternative software so long as it captures the minimum required information:
- a unique package identifier;
- substance or mixture name;
- amount of substance or mixture in the package;
- acquisition date; and
- storage location.
For time-sensitive chemicals (TSCs), the opening and expiry dates are also required.
Organisational units must also be able to quickly generate and share inventory data when requested, such as by a regulator.
If an organisational unit does not use ChemInventory, it must provide its inventory data to the HSW Division using the Chemwatch upload template, so the information can be added to the Chemwatch hazardous chemicals register.
Chemwatch
Chemwatch is UQ’s enterprise system for hazardous chemical register compliance. Chemwatch helps manage chemicals safely and compliance, with tools to:
- find chemical safety data sheets (SDS)
- print compliant chemical labels
- check or update hazardous chemical register details (access permissions required)
UQ Staff and students can access Chemwatch SDSs and labels by clicking the link below:
Access to Chemwatch hazardous chemical registers is restricted and only required in special circumstances. If required for your role / position, contact your local Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator who can submit a request to the HSW Division on your behalf.
