UQ is self-insured for workers' compensation. That means it manages workers' compensation claims and rehabilitation for University staff. All claims are subject to the legislative criteria of the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003.
For UQ policy, read the:
- Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Policy

- Lodging a Claim for Workers' Compensation Guideline.
Early support for injured staff
UQ recognises the importance of providing early support to staff members who experience a work-related injury or illness. Early rehabilitation support aims to assist injured staff in recovering while at work.
Some illnesses and injuries may restrict a staff member’s ability to complete tasks that are part of their normal role. The UQ rehabilitation team can make temporary adjustments to work tasks and provide access to equipment by developing a ‘suitable duties plan’ in consultation with the treating medical professional.
If you or a staff member needs rehabilitation or return-to-work support, email rehab@uq.edu.au.
Workers’ compensation coverage outside Queensland
If your principal place of employment with UQ is outside Queensland, you may not be covered by UQ’s workers’ compensation policies and may need additional insurance.
See Working outside Queensland (staff login required) for more information.
If you're travelling for a meeting, conference or other short-term activity with approved travel authorisation, you’re generally covered under UQ’s workers’ compensation policies – subject to the Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003.
